Adobe (also known as Adobe Systems, Inc.) is an American multinational computer technology company that develops and markets digital media and software products for the design industry, publishing, and the creative market. It was founded in San Jose California in 1982 by John Warnock and Charles Geschke (and formally incorporated on September 2, 1983) and headquartered in San Jose with main offices located in New York City. It occupies much of the Silicon Valley of the United States where its employees work. The Adobe logo is a stylized representation of a horse running left with an object in its mouth. In 1999, the company's name was changed from "Adobe Systems" to "Adobe Inc." to reflect this shift from being a company focused on developing and manufacturing software and hardware to one that develops and sells digital media and interactive software. The name comes from Adobe Creek which runs through San Jose: Adobe Creek is named after early California settler Phineas Banister, who built his home on the original Adobe property; he also named several of the creeks in the area (e.g., Adobe Creek). Adobe Systems' products include Adobe Flash player, Adobe Reader, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Creative Cloud (formerly known as Creative Suite), Illustrator, InDesign and GoLive. It is used by Adobe for its web applications. The source code of the browser is available under an open-source license that allows programmers to view, modify, improve it. The rendering engine Blink is based on Chromium. Adobe has since 2011 participated in the Google Summer of Code program, which provides stipends to students who create free software code or other material that gets incorporated into open-source software projects. In 2015, Adobe worked with Partners in Health to develop a platform for healthcare workers to electronically capture health information through patient histories.
