I've always been a fan of the art cut. A series of comics, usually in black and white, that tells a story about one or multiple subjects in a small story that is related through the pictures themselves. The series was created in 1969 by Jay Lynch and has been published continuously since 2002. These comics often explore themes such as social alienation and loneliness with their use of single characters interacting with other people who don't understand them or their struggles. Other topics include: death, loneliness, background radiation produced by nuclear testing, and human beings' relationships with nature which is often represented through anthropomorphic animals such as bears walking on two legs instead of four. __________________________________________________________________________________ This series of comics was my senior project for the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Each comic explores one specific topic, ranging from nuclear warfare to loneliness. My goal was to explore these themes through the use of images and also the words inside each comic book. The last two pages of each book were placed together to make a poster for each book. The posters were then placed in digital frames on a wall along with a microphone attached to a computer which reads out loud all the words from inside the graphic novels. These books speak about topics such as how humans will interact with animals when all animals can communicate with each other and how bugs could evolve into human beings due to the rising temperatures caused by global warming. __________________________________________________________________________________ Certain rules must be followed when making an art cut. These rules include: I decided to use these rules when creating this series of graphic novels, mainly because it follows the idea behind an art cut. The books were originally made to be read in any order, but I decided to create a continuity between them by making each book about a certain topic and using recurring characters throughout other books. These comics are part of the Art Cuts series (which includes 2008, 2009 and 2010) that was published once or twice a year in Copybook Magazine, an international student art magazine that was published each semester during my years at SVA. __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ "Here, we take a look at the story behind this year’s Art Cuts; we hope you enjoy these works and we would like to make a special thanks to all the artists who have submitted their work for this project." The team of editors, designers and programmers worked over the summer to create a multimedia presentation that includes five selected cartoonists from Copybook Magazine’s “Art Cuts” series. As an afterthought, the completed project was then projected onto a wall in a gallery space in New York City. __________________________________________________________________________________These images were sent out to the public through an e-mail and a PDF file. The PDF was put together for each issue and included the poster and a list of all the creators who had contributed to that particular issue. __________________________________________________________________________________ For this series, I decided to use the same format as I used in previous Art Cuts books by having two pages per comic book. This time, however, I placed one page of the comic book on top of another one so that I could have two stories side by side. Each page would be facing another story page which would tell a different story about the same characters at different times in their lives. cfa1e77820
